Alan Wake 2™

We are working closely with various teams at Remedy supporting new and existing technologies for their proprietary Northlight Engine. Doing so, we are glad to help these teams to focus on crafting their trademark intricate gameplay and gripping narratives.

Remedy’s critically acclaimed game Alan Wake 2 is the second release to feature the results of our efforts.

Our Contribution

Having collaborated with the Northlight team for several years prior, we were called upon to apply our knowledge and diligence in these areas:

Gameplay Programming

Working with Remedy’s state-of-the-art Entity Component System, we worked on various systems and features. Most notably:

  • Player abilities
  • Weapon upgrades
  • Inventory management
  • Door interactions
  • Game difficulty

UI/UX Programming

We took care of frequent UI middleware integration topics and enabled the game’s use of UI technology to display documents and text within the game world. We were also heavily involved in the creation of the game’s interactive case board system.

Platform engineering

We extended our earlier work on Northlight’s platform services layer by adding support for now-current generation consoles and helped the game team integrate these and other latest changes from Northlight. Especially the early stages of production saw us taking care of stability and performance enhancements for both build pipeline and runtime console targets.

Input System engineering

We developed large parts of Northlight’s handling for various input devices, -contexts, key bindings, display of correct button prompts as well as the game’s functionality for letting players configure their preferred inputs.

Editor and Pipeline Components

We closely collaborated with the Northlight Team on improving content creation tools and workflows for game teams. This includes contributions to Remedy’s terrain sculpting tools, automated build pipeline, on-demand tools distribution and automatic gathering, storage and distribution of debug symbols for compiled code.
